Modelling binary black hole precession through merger and ringdown, Eleanor Hamilton, University of Zurich

December 3, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

We present PhenomPNR, the first gravitational wave (GW) model where the precession effects have been tuned to numerical relativity (NR). Such high precision models are necessary for GW searches and accurate parameter estimation. This model is based on a catalogue of 80 new NR waveforms covering previously unexplored regions of parameter space. The model consists of two parts; the first NR-tuned model of the optimal emission direction through merger-ringdown and the first NR-tuned model of gravitational radiation in a co-precessing frame. In creating this model we have captured previously unmodelled features of precessing waveforms, increased our understanding of precessing systems and significantly improved the match between the model and NR waveforms within the more extreme parts of our calibration region.
