Joan Moragues Roca, Premi Ciutat de Palma de Novela en Català

The writer from Muro and former IAC3 member has been awarded for Les estrelles no parlen, which the jury praised for its originality and exploration of ethical dilemmas.

Joan Moragues Roca, a former IAC3 member who conducted his master’s thesis “Searching for post-glitch signals from pulsars with gravitational wave detectors” under the supervision of Dr. David Keitel, has been awarded the Premi Ciutat de Palma Llorenç Villalonga de Novel·la en Català for his novel “Les estrelles no parlen“.

The jury highlighted the novel’s originality and its thought-provoking ethical dilemmas, particularly regarding child abuse and its long-term consequences. The story unfolds across two parallel timelines: one follows German scientist Fritz Haber in the early 20th century and World War I, while the other is set in the present day, centering on a nurse named Bàrbara, who struggles with family secrets and a complex new patient.

Upon receiving the news, Moragues admitted he was surprised, having never expected to win. The author, originally from Muro, also reflected on the importance of supporting Catalan literature, emphasizing the need to preserve and promote the language in cultural spaces.

This prestigious recognition showcases not only Moragues’ literary talent but also the diverse paths that scientific training can lead to. His background in astrophysics and gravitational wave research at IAC3 demonstrates how science and storytelling can intertwine, bringing unique perspectives to literature.

Congratulations, Joan! We are proud to see a former IAC3 researcher excel in both science and the arts.
