UIB and AstroMallorca Organize Solar Eclipse Conference

On Friday, March 28, 2025, the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) and AstroMallorca hosted a public conference on solar eclipses in Mallorca. The event took place in the auditorium of the Sa Riera building (UIB) from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and featured four expert talks covering different aspects of solar eclipses. The speakers included astronomers and astrophysicists from the UIB, the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA), and AstroMallorca.

The conference was organized in anticipation of the partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025, the first in a series of three solar eclipses that will be observable from Mallorca in the coming years. The event aimed to inform the public about the characteristics, scientific relevance, and observation techniques of solar eclipses.

Among the speakers, Manuel Luna, a member of the Astrophysics Group at IAC3, presented a talk on the solar corona, discussing its structure and dynamics during eclipses.

Conference Program:

  • How to Observe Solar Eclipses from Mallorca – Tomeu Mas (AstroMallorca)

  • Solar Eclipses: Main Characteristics and Scientific Importance – Ernesto Nicola (AstroMallorca)

  • The Solar Corona – Manuel Luna (UIB, IAC3)

  • Eclipses on Other Worlds – Sebastià Barceló (IAA & UIB collaborator)

The event was free and open to the public, attracting a large audience interested in learning more about these fascinating celestial phenomena.
