A Dynamical Birthday: Celebrating 60 Years with Slow-Fast Systems

On June 26 and 27, 2025, the Dynamical Systems Group at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) organized the workshop “Analysis of Slow-Fast Dynamics in Evolutionary Trends” at the Hotel Cala Santanyí. This scientific event brought together leading researchers in the field of dynamical systems, with a particular focus on piecewise systems and their applications.

The main objective of the workshop was to serve as a meeting point for experts working in ordinary differential equations, offering a space to share recent advances, discuss ongoing challenges, and explore new lines of research. Special emphasis was placed on themes aligned with the group’s current national research project: “Low-Dimensional Dynamical Systems (LDiDySAN)”, which focuses on the study of piecewise systems in low dimensions.

The event served as a special occasion to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Antonio E. Teruel, a founding member and current principal investigator of the Dynamical Systems Group, as well as deputy director of the Institute of Applied Computing and Community Code (IAC3).

Throughout the two-day workshop, Professor Teruel’s colleagues and collaborators contributed not only with scientific presentations but also with personal anecdotes and reflections on his influential career. The celebratory atmosphere highlighted both his scientific contributions and the strong collaborative ties within the group.

During the sessions, researchers reviewed the objectives and results of the current project, assessed its ongoing progress, and proposed new research directions that may inspire future initiatives. The combination of technical depth and personal warmth made the workshop a memorable occasion for all attendees.
