Colloquium David Keitel: Pushing frontiers in gravitational wave astrophysics
February 5, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Abstract:
The field of gravitational waves (GWs) has entered the era of frequent detections and is starting to focus more and more on the astrophysical insights that can be gained from them. At the same time, there are still many expected types of GW signals out there that we have not yet begun to detect. My work on LIGO-Virgo data focuses on two distinct areas, but they both have in common that we aim to push forward the frontiers of what we can achieve with the current detectors. On the compact binary coalescence side, where detections are now becoming routine, I’m interested in pushing the limits of waveform models and Bayesian parameter estimation and in exploring the immense astrophysical potential of finding
gravitationally lensed GWs signals. In parallel, we are still pursuing another “first detection” that would open a different observational window into the dynamics of neutron stars: continuous or long-duration transient signals from individual spinning objects.
Looking beyond the capabilities of the current detector network, I will finish this talk with a brief outlook to the potential of future detectors like the Einstein Telescope and LISA for these particular research avenues.
