Seminar: Non-Hermitian Turbulence Control in Nonlinear Optics

September 6, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The next 12th Setember 2022 the Prof. Kestutis Stalinas (ICREA Research Professor at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)) will give a Seminar. The seminar will be in the Sala de Graus, Edifici Mateu Orfila i Rotger, UIB.

Title: Non-Hermitian Turbulence Control in Nonlinear Optics
Author: Kestutis Staliunas
Abstract:
We propose a method for a control of turbulence by modifying the excitation cascade of turbulence. The method is based on the asymmetric coupling between the spatio-temporal excitation modes by non-Hermitian potentials. The non-Hermitian potentials are known, since recently, to enable unidirectional coupling between the modes. We demonstrate that such unidirectional coupling towards larger (smaller) wavenumbers can increase (reduce) the energy of the turbulent states, and therefore influence the character of turbulence.

The study is based on the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation, a universal model for pattern formation and turbulence in a wide range of systems including nonlinear optical systems. The most straightforward application of the proposed method is the optical systems [1], however is extendable to other wave systems.
