Gravity Seminar: Critical phenomena in general relativity: Beyond spherical symmetry, Isabel Suárez, UIB

There is numerical evidence implying that in general relativity solutions near the threshold of black hole formation in spherical symmetry follow critical behavior, this is, scale-invariance, universality and power-law scaling. However, when abandoning such symmetry the full extent of critical phenomena in gravitational collapse has yet to be completely understood. During this seminar I will explain what critical phenomena in gravitational collapse are, their characteristics in spherical symmetry and the changes of paradigm when moving to axisymmetry.
