Dr. Alicia M. Sintes, full professor of theoretical physics at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and director of the Institute of Applied Computing and Community Code (IAC3), has been appointed as a member of the newly formed Mesa Científica (Scientific Advisory Board) for Palma’s candidacy to become the European Capital of Culture in 2031.
The board, officially presented by Palma’s mayor, Jaime Martínez, brings together a distinguished group of experts from fields such as scientific research, sustainability, culture, and education. Sintes, an internationally recognized expert in gravitational wave astrophysics and a key figure within the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration, joins the board to ensure that science and innovation play a central role in shaping the cultural vision for Palma 2031.
Her involvement underscores the importance of integrating scientific thought and academic excellence into cultural planning and public policy. The Mesa Científica will provide strategic guidance and propose interdisciplinary initiatives that highlight Palma’s strengths as a forward-thinking and inclusive cultural capital.
Sintes’ participation also reflects IAC3’s ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue between science and society, reinforcing the role of research in addressing today’s cultural and environmental challenges.
