Gravity Seminar: Measuring black hole spins from gravitational-wave observations, Krishnendu Naderi Varium, AEI Hannover
June 10, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The observed gravitational-wave transient catalog includes binaries of varying intrinsic properties, mainly masses, and spins. We have enough evidence for asymmetric mass distributions and slow spins but still lack evidence for high spins. After examining the peculiarities of observed binaries and their spin distributions, we focus on the significance of employing accurate waveform models while inferring the binary properties of current and future detections. The primary aim of our study is to compare the performance of two precessing waveform models; one contains higher modes, and the other does not. Findings from simulated binary observations establish that the usage of higher modes improves our estimations except for equal mass and face-on highly spinning binaries.
