Gravity seminar: Miquel Trias, Google — Transitioning from a PhD in the LSC to a Google Sales Account Executive: Exploring Career Paths for Physics PhDs and the Interplay Between Public Research and the Private Sector

Following a 4-year PhD within the Relativity and Gravitation group at UIB as a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, and a subsequent 1.5-year postdoctoral position at IAC3, I transitioned to a role at Google 11 years ago. Initially, I served as an Analytical Consultant, and currently, I hold the position of Account Executive. Throughout my career, even in my current role, I have utilized skills and capabilities cultivated during my academic journey, which have proven to be distinctive assets. In this presentation, I will share my personal experiences leading a Sales team at Google, and discuss other roles within the private sector that are well-suited for individuals with a PhD in Physics (or Science, more broadly), where they can truly excel. These roles span from data scientists in data-driven companies to AI or quantum computing researchers at Google.

Furthermore, I aim to address the challenge we face in Europe regarding the limited knowledge transfer between public research institutions and private enterprises. I will discuss our role and responsibility in facilitating change in this area.
