Abstract:
Spiking photonic neural networks based on subwavelength neuron-like excitable devices are of paramount importance since they could enable the high parallelism and energy efficiency needed for power-efficient brain-inspired artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Despite the significant advances in neuromorphic (brain-like) photonics, ultracompact nanophotonic elements for emission and detection of spiking signals (down to a few-photon), as required for efficient spike-based computation, remain largely unexplored. In this talk, I will introduce the main challenges, early achievements, and opportunities towards a key-enabling photonic neuro-architecture using III-V integrated circuits based on nanoscale resonant tunnelling diodes (nanoRTDs) integrated with nanoscale light-emitting diodes (nanoLEDs), to realize novel neuron emitter and receiver spiking nodes.
